Ariane 6

Airbus Netherlands plays a vital role in Europe’s heavy-lift launch vehicle, Ariane 6, which guarantees secure, autonomous access to space for European missions, scientific explorations, and commercial constellations.

Building on decades of launcher heritage from Ariane 1 through Ariane 5, Airbus Netherlands designs and manufactures two core structural components at the heart of the launch vehicle: the Vulcain Aft Bay (VUAB) and the Vinci Thrust Frame (VITF).

Vulcain Aft Bay
Located at the base of the rocket’s main stage, the Vulcain Aft Bay surrounds and protects the core Vulcain 2.1 engine. The VUAB provides essential mechanical support and thermal shielding at the bottom of the rocket. During lift-off and ascent, the Vulcain engine generates enormous thrust and thermal radiation. The VUAB holds the structural integrity of the main stage under extreme mechanical loads while protecting critical internal systems from the intense heat generated by the main engine and solid rocket boosters. Remarkable for its mechanical efficiency, the interface secures the powerful engine using just 16 high-strength bolts. Standing over five meters tall and wide, this massive module forms a major structural interface of the rocket. Due to its dimensions, each completed VUAB embarks on a unique journey, traveling from production facility Nebula in Oegstgeest via Dutch waterways and the Rhine to ArianeGroup’s integration facility in Les Mureaux, France.

Vinci Thrust Frame
Positioned in the upper stage of Ariane 6, the Vinci Thrust Frame carries the re-ignitable Vinci engine. Its primary role is to transfer the immense thrust generated by the engine directly to the payload stage, enabling complex multi-orbit missions and controlled deorbiting. The VITF represents a major leap in engineering excellence, produced using advanced precision machining that consolidates over 1,000 legacy parts into just 11 major structural elements for increased reliability and reduced mass. By drastically reducing the part count through advanced manufacturing, it significantly lowers launch mass and minimizes potential failure points during critical orbital maneuvers.

Sustaining Europe’s space ambitions
With flight-proven performance following Ariane 6’s successful maiden launch and serial production operating in its advanced smart factory, Airbus Netherlands continues to deliver core flight hardware for Europe’s commercial and scientific future in space.
